1n5 Eating Disorder prevention
Of the one in ten individuals who will develop an eating disorder in their lifetime, onset typically occurs in adolescence, underscoring the importance of early intervention in providing protective factors to vulnerable young people (Qian et al., 2022; Ranalli & Studen-Pavlovich, 2021). 1N5 is a suicide prevention nonprofit that targets mental health upstream through their education and advocacy work with young people, and since eating disorders have the second-highest mortality rate of any mental illness, it is critical to build prevention strategies related to eating disorders into 1N5’s framework (Smink et al., 2012). My aims to address this were:
1. To stop the stigma surrounding eating disorders through storytelling and educational infographics by partnering with NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association) for National Eating Disorders Awareness Week on social media
2. To educate caregivers and young people about eating disorder prevention, body image, and related resources by creating brochures for the 1N5 team to distribute during programming
3. To employ tangible eating disorder prevention strategies by outlining and marketing an interactive prevention workshop that will be implemented in the Fall
According to a post-survey for the social media programming, 100% of individuals reported that the provided resources improved their sense of personal agency and word choice knowledge surrounding eating disorders. In combination with the educational resources and outlined community-based training, 1N5 has successfully expanded their mental health advocacy and stigma reduction work to incorporate eating disorder prevention.
